Ptolemy

ircamera.as.arizona.edu/NatSci102/NatSci102/lectures/ptolemy.htm

Ptolemy. lived around 150 AD, and elaborated the geocentric (earth-centered) model of the ... Ptolemy's epigram, from the

Well do I know that I am mortal, a creature of one day.
But if my mind follows the winding paths of the stars
Then my feet no longer rest on earth, but standing by
Zeus himself I take my fill of ambrosia, the divine dish.

- Ptolemy's epigram, from the Almagest, probably written by himself

Ptolemies - Livius

www.livius.org › index › ancient Greeceancient Egypt

This marked the beginning of Egypt's independence under a new dynasty, the Ptolemies (or Lagids). Ptolemy accepted the royal title in 306.

In 332, the Macedonian king Alexander the Great conquered Egypt and gave a new capital to the old kingdom along the Nile, Alexandria. After his death (11 June 323), his friend Ptolemy became satrap of Egypt, and started to behave himself rather independently. When Perdiccas, the regent of Alexander's mentally unfit successor Philip Arridaeus arrived in 320, he was defeated. This marked the beginning of Egypt's independence under a new dynasty, the Ptolemies (or Lagids). Ptolemy accepted the royal title in 306.

The fourteen kings of this dynasty were all called Ptolemy and are numbered by modern historians I to XV (Ptolemy VII never reigned). A remarkable aspect of the Ptolemaic monarchy was the prominence of women (seven queens named Cleopatra and four Berenices), who rose to power when their sons or brothers were too young. This was almost unique in Antiquity. Another intriguing aspect was the willingness of the Ptolemies to present themselves to the Egyptians as native pharaohs (cf. the pictures below, some of which are in Egyptian style). This was less unique: the Seleucid dynasty that reigned the Asian parts of Alexander's empire did the same.

"A remarkable aspect of the Ptolemaic monarchy was the prominence of women (seven queens named Cleopatra and four Berenices), "

The fourteen kings of this dynasty were all called Ptolemy

The Messianic Temple

By: Austin, Allen 2011

"The Earliest Egyptian creation stories are not just similar to the book of Genesis, they are the same; in time they became convoluted, conflated and disconnected from their ancient past. Taking the Bible at its word, my research revealed some astonishing facts concerning the Egyptian Zep Tepi, or creation story. Did you know it contains the story of Adam and Eve? They are called Wa and Aa and were led out of the Djeba domain (Paradise) to the Wetjeset-Neter domain (Our Reality) because of the snake, the Great Leaping One. It also states the world was destroyed by a global flood and when the primeval waters receded, the Shebtiw (Noah's family) began rebuilding the world. It doesn't end there; there are more perfect parallels to the creation stories in Genesis and Early Jewish Writings."

THE DIVINE SOULS

How might we explain Akhenaten's strange fascination with the benben-stone? What did it mean to him, and why did he feel it necessary to place within the heart of his temple complexes cult objects that could easily have been construed as idolatrous fetish stones? As Egyptologist Donald Redford felt obliged to comment on this subject:
That Amenophis iv should, in the light of his well-attested aversion to polytheistic symbolism in mythology, have permitted this icon to a naive account of creation to find a prominent place in his thinking, is strange to say the least. Obviously the bnbn did not conjure up for the king the objectionable connections with mythology that we might have expected.35
To understand Akhenaten's reverence of the benben-stone we must look at exactly what this cult object meant to the Ancient Egyptians. In very basic terms it was the crystallisation of the primeval mound, or hill — the first solid ground that emerged from the primeval ocean in the darkness that preceded the light of the first morning. It was a representation of the djed-pillar, or perch, on which the primeval god Atum, a role adopted later by Re, was able to effect acts of creation in the world.36 A more detailed description of the benben-stone is given in the Pyramid Texts, found inscribed on the tomb walls of various Fifth- and Sixth-Dynasty pyramids, such as the Pyramid of Unas (c. 2370-2340 Bc) at Saqqara. This extraordinary collection of cosmological writings and magical spells constitutes what is perhaps the oldest body /Page 163/ of magical-religious material anywhere in the world. More significantly, Egyptian language scholar RT. Rundle Clark concluded that they were composed 'in the main' by the astronomer-priests of Heliopolis.37 Their repeated references to the solar cult ofAtum-Re and Annu (Heliopolis), as well as their direct connection with the kings and pyramids of Old Kingdom times, all point clearly towards a Heliopolitan origin for this material.
The original benben-stone positioned on a stone pillar in the court adjoining the Mansion of the Benben at Heliopolis was in effect a marker that symbolised the Point of First Creation, the place of sep tepi, the First Time, where the initial group of nine netjeru gods, known in Heliopolitan tradition as the Great Ennead, made their entry into the world. In time, these divine beings were followed by a second group of nine gods known as the Lesser Ennead, who were in turn followed by a third and final group of nine variable gods. Finally, these were replaced by a further group of 'mythical' individuals known in the Pyramid Texts as the Divine Souls.38
Egyptologist Abdel-Aziz Saleh recorded in his definitive work Excavations at Heliopolis that the Divine Souls are to be equated with the Shemsu-hor, who he described as 'the pre-dynastic lords, or monarchs, of the city'.39 These demi-gods were, he wrote, viewed by the priests of Heliopolis as the true founders of its first physical temple, known as the Mansion of the Princes or the Mansion of the Nobles.40 Indeed, the priesthood would seem to have been convinced that the Divine Souls had ruled from Heliopolis and its environs during a golden age prior to the coming of the mortal Horus-kings.41
To these astronomer-priests of great wisdom and understanding, such concepts were not simply myths;

Sep Tepi
The ancient Egyptians had a concept they called the Sep Tepi (First Time), meaning the primordial golden age of the gods. According to the Egyptians’ own legends, the dynastic Egyptians enjoyed the exceptionally advanced technologies and mystical systems , which were actually the legacy of this elder culture, ended by a fierce catatstrophe. The Edfu building texts (Andrew Collins, The Gods of Eden) record the history of the Sep Tepi as it was passed down among the ancient priesthood. The texts describe a temple surrounded by a possibly man-made channel of water with a nearby field of reeds. This is called the Island of the Egg, and it is associated with the point of First Creation, or the Island of the Twin Flames. Divine pillars (djed pillars), were situated around a sacred domain here called the Wadjeset-Hor or Wadjeset-Neter (homeland), the original divine inhabitants of which numbered 60, along with the Sages and an enigmatic figure known simply as “This One (embodied bird). Then, the Eye wreaked destruction on enemy and allies alike, causing mass devastation. The first temple was destroyed and all the inhabitants died. There is a period of darkness where death and decay are everywhere, and the Island of the Egg is now renamed, being given titles like the Island of Combat, the Island of Trampling, and the Island of Peace. This is the end of the First Age, or Sep Tepi. Then, a second generation of divine inhabitants reclaimed this sacred area, the Shebtu (ogdoad of builder-gods). They inexplicably sailed away to another part of the world to continue their task of rebuilding. As time passed, the divine inhabitants of the Wadjeset-Neter were replaced by the Shemsu-Hor ( “Followers of Horus”), semi-divine beings who ruled pre-dynastic Egypt and, eventually by the Horus-kings of the First Dynasty circa 3100 BC. The ancient historian Manetho described a period of about 25 ky before the rise of Menes, first king of the First Dynastic period in Egypt. The first rulers were the gods themselves, particularly Horus, who ruled for a period of about 13 kya. Herodotus records that 11,340 years have passed since the reign of the first Pharaoh, placing the beginning of that reign in the 12th millennium. It is likely that this first Pharaoh was included among the Shemsu-Hor, who were recognized as being demi-divine like the later Horus-kings. Circa 3100 BC, Hor-Aha (Menes), united the Upper and Lower Egypt initiating the First Dynastic Period.

Chapter 43

Looking for the First Time

Page 403

Here is what the Ancient Egyptians said about the First Time, Zep Tepi, when the gods ruled in their country: they said it was a golden age' during which the waters of the abyss receded, the primordial , darkness was banished, and humanity, emerging into the light, was offered the gifts of civilization.' They spoke also of intermediaries between gods and men — the Urshu, a category of lesser divinities whose title meant 'the Watchers'.3 And they preserved particularly vivid recollections of the gods themselves, puissant and beautiful beings called the Neteru who lived on earth with humankind and exercised their sovereignty from Heliopolis and other sanctuaries up and down the Nile. Some of these Neteru were male and some female but all possessed a range of supernatural powers which included the ability to appear, at will, as men or women, or as animals, birds, reptiles, trees or plants. Paradoxically, their words and deeds seem to have reflected human passions and preoccupations. Likewise, although they were portrayed as stronger and more intelligent than humans, it was believed that they could grow sick — or even die, or be killed — under certain circumstances.'
Records of prehistory
Archaeologists are adamant that the epoch of the gods, which the Ancient Egyptians, called the First Time, is nothing more than a /page 404/myth.

GODS OF THE FIRST TIME

"According to Heliopolitan theology, the nine original gods who appeared in Egypt in the First Time were Ra, Shu, Tefnut, Geb, Nut, Osiris, Isis, Nepthys and Set. The offspring of these deities included well-known figures such as Horus and Anubis. In addition, other companies of gods were recognized, notably at Memphis and Hermopolis, where there were important and very ancient cults dedicated to Ptah and to Thoth.1 These First Time deities were all in one sense or another gods of creation who had given shape to chaos through their divine will. Out of that chaos they formed and populated the sacred land of Egypt,2 wherein, for many thousands of years, they ruled among men as divine pharaohs.3

'I stand before the masters who witnessed the genesis, who were the authors of their own forms, who walked the dark, circuitous passages of their own becoming. . .

I stand before the masters who witnessed the transformation of the body of a man into the body in spirit, who were witnesses to resurrection when the corpse of Osiris entered the mountain and the soul of Osiris walked out shining. . . when he came forth from death, a shining thing, his face white with heat. . .

I stand before the masters who know the histories of the dead, who decide which tales to hear again, who judge the books of lives as either fun or empty, who are themselves authors of truth. And they are Isis and Osiris, the divine intelligences. And when the story is written and the end is good and the soul of a man is perfected, with a shout they lift him into heaven. . .'

Not to be confused with Tantalus (son of Broteas).

Karagöl ("The black lake") in Mount Yamanlar, İzmir, Turkey, associated with the accounts surrounding Tantalus and named after him as "Lake Tantalus".
Tantalus (Ancient Greek: Τάνταλος, Tántalos) was a Greek mythological figure, most famous for his eternal punishment in Tartarus. He was made to stand in a pool of water beneath a fruit tree with low branches, with the fruit ever eluding his grasp, and the water always receding before he could take a drink. He was the father of Pelops, Niobe and Broteas, and was a son of Zeus[1] and the nymph Plouto. Thus, like other heroes in Greek mythology such as Theseus and the Dioskouroi, Tantalus had both a hidden, divine parent and a mortal one.

In mythology, Tantalus became one of the inhabitants of Tartarus, the deepest portion of the Underworld, reserved for the punishment of evildoers; there Odysseus saw him.[16] The association of Tantalus with the underworld is underscored by the names of his mother Plouto ("riches", as in gold and other mineral wealth), and grandmother, Chthonia ("earth").

Tantalus was initially known for having been welcomed to Zeus' table in Olympus, like Ixion. There he is said to have misbehaved and stolen ambrosia and nectar to bring it back to his people,[17] and revealed the secrets of the gods.[18]

Most famously, Tantalus offered up his son, Pelops, as a sacrifice. He cut Pelops up, boiled him, and served him up in a banquet for the gods. The gods became aware of the gruesome nature of the menu, so they did not touch the offering; only Demeter, distraught by the loss of her daughter, Persephone, absentmindedly ate part of the boy's shoulder. Clotho, one of the three Fates, ordered by Zeus, brought the boy to life again (she collected the parts of the body and boiled them in a sacred cauldron), rebuilding his shoulder with one wrought of ivory made by Hephaestus and presented by Demeter. The revived Pelops grew to be an extraordinarily handsome youth. The god Poseidon took him to Mount Olympus to teach him to use chariots. Later, Zeus threw Pelops out of Olympus due to his anger at Tantalus. The Greeks of classical times claimed to be horrified by Tantalus's doings; cannibalism and kin slaying were atrocities and taboo.

Tantalus's punishment for his act, now a proverbial term for temptation without satisfaction (the source of the English word tantalise[19]), was to stand in a pool of water beneath a fruit tree with low branches. Whenever he reached for the fruit, the branches raised his intended meal from his grasp. Whenever he bent down to get a drink, the water receded before he could get any. Over his head towers a threatening stone like the one that Sisyphus is punished to roll up a hill.[20] This fate has cursed him with eternal deprivation of nourishment.

In a different story, Tantalus was blamed for indirectly having stolen the dog made of gold created by Hephaestus (god of metals and smithing) for Rhea to watch over infant Zeus. Tantalus's friend Pandareus stole the dog and gave it to Tantalus for safekeeping. When asked later by Pandareus to return the dog, Tantalus denied that he had it, saying he "had neither seen nor heard of a golden dog." According to Robert Graves, this incident is why an enormous stone hangs over Tantalus's head. Others state that it was Tantalus who stole the dog, and gave it to Pandareus for safekeeping.

Tantalus was also the founder of the cursed House of Atreus in which variations on these atrocities continued. Misfortunes also occurred as a result of these acts, making the house the subject of many Greek tragedies. Tantalus's grave-sanctuary stood on Sipylus[21] but honours were paid him at Argos, where local tradition claimed to possess his bones.[22] In Lesbos, there was another hero-shrine in the small settlement of Polion and a mountain named after Tantalos

grammar.about.com › ... › Main Clause - Oxymoron - Cached - Similar Metaphor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A common definition of a metaphor can be described as a comparison that shows how two things that are not alike in most ways are similar in another ...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaphor

Metaphor is the concept of understanding one thing in terms of another. A metaphor is a figure of speech that constructs an analogy between two things or ideas; the analogy is conveyed by the use of a metaphorical word in place of some other word. For example: "Her eyes were glistening jewels".

Metaphor also denotes rhetorical figures of speech that achieve their effects via association, comparison or resemblance (e.g., antithesis, hyperbole, metonymy and simile, which are all types of metaphor).[1]

The English metaphor derives from the 16th century Old French métaphore, from the Latin metaphora "carrying over", Greek (μεταφορά) metaphorá “transfer”,[2] from (μεταφέρω) metaphero “to carry over”, “to transfer”[3] and from (μετά) meta “between”[4] + (φέρω) phero, “to bear”, “to carry”.[5]

Quote from: Vyse Dyne on November 22, 2008, 07:16:32 PMThe word occult comes from the Latin word occultus (clandestine, hidden, secret), referring to "knowledge of the hidden"

Or occulti, occulto, occultum, occulto, occulti, occultorum, occultis, occultos, or occultis.
Depends on where it is in the sentence.
